In 1962 we went to Austria!
This time, unlike our Switzerland holiday*, we flew from Southend and over the English Channel to Ostende. Similar to our Switzerland holiday, we then traveled by coach all the way to Austria. The coach was really nice but after a few hours of traveling, it started to get a little tedious! There were a number of stops in France to allow everybody to “stretch their legs” a little. Our first over-night stop was in Arras and while the railway station was apparently not far away from our hotel, I was not able to go there.
We ultimately ended up in a small town called Fuschl, which was not far from Salzburg. On one of our non-traveling days, I wanted to take a rowing boat out into the lake and, as Valerie was happy to come along for the cruise, we duly “shipped out”. At one point, Valerie decided that she would like to “have a go” at rowing!
She did very well, but then gave me the oars in order to get us back up against the wooden dock!
Sweet memories and good pics again. 🙂

As a child, my only experience in a boat was a paddle boat in Poole Park. I never progressed to a row boat (and now look at us!)

Going from a little (6ft?) paddle boat to a 40ft narrow boat is a bit of a leap ……… but you are clearly managing! 🙂

I had lots of years in between!

Hope you two knew how to swim. No life vests? Nice photo from way back then.

Hi Yvonne. When I was scanning those pics, my thoughts went in the same direction. Neither of us could swim and, in 1962, I don’t recall ever seeing a life jacket!

I never went up to Austria yet. At the moment I am often driving up to France and Belgium. It is really nice in Europe and I would never want to stay elsewhere. 🙂

Keep an open mind Sherrie. Home is where you make it so, and who knows what opportunities may present themselves to you. 🙂

Yes, and home is where your heart is. 🙂

Nice shoes were never worn when my cousin and I took Grandpa’s rowboat out onto Oil Creek. One of us rowed while the other bailed.

Chuckle! That brought back memories of an old Laurel & Hardy silent movie. Same scenario ……… but they eventually sank! 🙂

It was just part of our world back then. We spent many hours in that boat and accepted its leaky bottom without worry. Grandma always had a box of old coffee cans in the wood shed and we made sure one was in the boat before we “set sail”. My family (a different cousin) still owns the property and last time we were there a rowboat was drawn up in the same spot near the spillway where the old mill, built in 1799, once stood.

It must be so nice to still have access to the property. Pure nostalgia! 🙂

So lovely memories, Colin. I know Fuschl. Was there some years ago……. uhm….. 20 1/2 years ago to be exact…

Knowing your origin, I was wondering what response I would get from you. Fuschl was (perhaps still is?) a lovely little town. 🙂

It is in a part of Austria I am not often. Actually I lived on both ends and only drove from one to the other. But over the years I explored a lot more between. Fuschl was a ver sweet little village 20 years back too and I am sure it still is 🙂

How did you keep your shoes so white? 😉

I have no idea what those shoes were. My guess would be the “runner” of its time, although I don’t remember having a pair. Sorry Ilex, I can’t help you there!

Hi Chris. See “Dear Diary – Page 1” – May 12, 2015. Alternatively, if you put Valerie in the search field, you will get lots of references! 🙂
