You “guys” that have been Following for some time now will know that I am usually awake and totally “wired” by 5:00am. For anybody who has not contemplated that kind of a schedule, you would be amazed at how much “stuff” I can work through between 5:00am and 8:00am, when the rest of the world wakes up!
Ray knows my schedule extremely well and so ignores me completely when I get out of bed. He knows that I will have a coffee and a bowl of cereals and then go down into the basement. Either he realizes that sharing may not be my strong point at that time in the morning or, more likely, he is too drowsy at 5:00am to contemplate the possibilities.
He is however extremely alert around 8:00am as he seems to respond to me turning off the lights in the basement in that he suddenly appears at the top of our basement stairs to meet me!
Last night was a routine event until around 3:45am. I must have been partially awake because I suddenly heard a loud (really loud) thump from somewhere outside my bedroom. I was immediately alert and just listened for any additional sounds. Did we have an intruder? Why wasn’t Ray barking? Perhaps it was Ray who made the noise…. perhaps he fell off the sofa again? Why couldn’t I hear him moving around? Was he okay?
With all those unanswered questions going through my mind, I knew that I had to get up (even at 3:45am) and check everything out.Β I opened my bedroom door and there was Ray… just standing there looking at me. I couldn’t “read” anything from his body language, other than perhaps “G’morning Dad. Sorry! I fell off the sofa again!”
We had a brief one-sided chat (I talked – he listened), and then he turned around and curled up on the floor. All seemed to be well and so I went back to bed thinking that the floor was probably the best place for him. Even Ray cannot fall off the floor!
When I got up again around 5:00am, he was curled up on a chair! I guess that while the sofa was a threat to him, a chair somehow was a feasible alternative, but if he insists on stretching out without noting where his body is relative to anything, there are going to be more thumps in the night! A relaxed dog weighing just under 80 pounds cannot free fall an 18 inches drop without making a noticeable sound!
I imagine it was a rude awakening for poor Ray too! π

Yes… I can imagine it was a bit of a shock for him!

Ray, I know what it’s like to fall off the furniture. But I fall further because I am smaller than you.

Hmmmm…. that’s not quite right Lexi buddy. An 18″ drop is an 18″ drop regardless of who falls down it. In fact, I may land harder than you because of my weight. I talked to my Dad about this and he says that acceleration due to gravity (whatever that is!) is 32ft/sec2 (whatever that is!) and he cannot remember much more from Physics (whatever that is!) at school (I know what school is!). Woof! Ray.

No, no, I am quite certain I fall further. I can tell by how it feels. How about we both try to not fall at all. π oww

Poor Ray. I bet he hurt himself a bit. Being that large and falling has to some how hurt. Does he not like to sleep in a large dog bed or does he chew those up?

He pretty much sleeps anywhere, but does seem to have a preference to having his head elevated. On my bed… his head is often on a pillow. On the sofa or chair, his head rests on the arm. As for hurting himself? Being asleep and therefore totally relaxed probably saved him!

Aww, loved reading about the one sided conversation. I can just imagine his eyes looking at you π Poor guy at the rude awakening. Oh I guess poor you and Carol who were awakened to, but at least you didn’t fall π

Ray does have a very good “Oops… didn’t mean to do that!” look. π

Eventually he’ll figure it out….maybe.

Oh, poor Ray, but so cute how you described him standing in front of your bedroom door!

The problem is that when he joins us on the sofa, we watch out for him. There have been so many occasions when Carol, or I, have found ourselves supporting his rear end because he just stretched it over the edge of the sofa! Of course, at night he has no such safety net! π
