My initial thoughts about dogs were not only rather negative, as a result of being bitten by a German Shepherd when I was around 14 years old, but included the observation that “they smelled a little when dry… and smelled a lot when wet”
I was going through the photos taken down by the lake the other day, and could not resist sharing this one with you all!
His legs and his underside are totally soaked as you can see if you right mouse click, and have a View Image option which enlarges the pic.
Fortunately, the walk back home helped to dry him out a little!
Love this post!
I run an animal blog that has a series called Dog Breeds 101 that teaches people about what it means to own different breeds. If you have some spare time I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think!

Great job. Always good to see Posts which can help develop healthy human/dog relationships, and knowing what to expect as the “cute puppy” grows is a huge benefit.

I’m definitely all for the healthy human/dog relationships as there are far too many dogs abandoned because they are no longer the ‘cute puppy’. Thank you for noticing that is the aim of my posts!

I can understand how being bit by a dog would make you not want to be involved with them!

Yes, Sabre (the dog involved) left quite the impression… two little holes!

What a happy and handsome soul he is, even when he is wet… 🙂

Nothing wrong with getting a good wade in – so long as the people can stand the smell!

Ahhh, the “wet dog” smell! It is distinctive, isn’t it? But we love them anyway!

Bit like babies (human)! They don’t always smell the nicest! 🙂

He’s a mighty handsome gent. But yeah, wet dog smell…distinctive. Even the small white ones stink when wet.

The wet dog scent is most distinctive, and one that I rather enjoy. Sadly the only time I can smell it is bath time since Sam would rather light his fur on fire before getting wet!

I can imagine that burning fur is rather unpleasant on the nostrils!

Love him, wet or dry. Besides, there is nothing so affectionate as a wet dog!
Maggie loves the sea and to swim, yet not once did she try to jump in the marina or the river when we had the boat. All being well (fingers and everything possible crossed) we will only be a short walk from a lovely sandy beach where dogs are allowed all year. She will be in her element, the exercise will be good for her arthritis, and the salt water excellent for her feet.

That’ll be so nice for her (and you two)! Let’s hope that it all comes together for you all. 🙂

A great picture of a Happy, Wet Ray!
Plus its not his fault if he smells some when wet, right? 🙂 Still just as lovable!

He loves it down there, but sadly the lake is not always suitable for getting into due to algae and pollutants!

He’s such a beautiful dog, wet or dry! I see we have something in common. I was bitten when I was 9. I still have the scars to remind me never reach toward a dog without asking the owner first.

Hi Dorinda (Always nice to hear from you!) – I got off better than you! The German Shepherd was thought to be protecting its “Mom” and I was too close. It was not an aggressive bite, but more of a warning nip (no difference to me at that age)! She broke the skin on the top of my leg, but there was no bite per se. Still vividly remember it though!

Oh yes, that is something you never forget. My son was bitten on his backside. No fault of his, though. We tend to think of dogs as these fluffy toys, forgetting they have teeth!! 😃

True. For some reason we do not easily acknowledge that they, just like people, can display undesirable traits based on prior abuse or other circumstances. That was a major concern initially with Ray. Everybody wanted to touch him… but he valued his space from people and ensured that it was known! He was not friendly!
