James Blunt was an unknown to me until this song was released. I love it because while it may seem like just another “heartbreak” song, it goes further in that the singer is recognizing both the futility of the “dream” (probably much like my infatuation in the 1960’s with Marianne Faithfull) and, more importantly, a recognition of his own inadequacy (drug addiction). Generally a little different from the average “failed romance” songs of the time (2004).

I like this song too despite the bad rap it gets.

Hi Cindy. I believe that music, like wine, should only be judged by the listener/taster! If I like a piece of music … it is good regardless of what others say. With wine, if I like the taste … it is a good wine regardless of the label. Nobody is forcing me to listen to anything, or drink anything, so I have to wonder why some people feel the need for negativity. It is, after all, simply personal taste. Thanks for passing by.

I always loved his music and that song was a favourite along with Goodbye my lover. So very different to the 80s love ballads I grew up with.

Given that the1960s -1970s were my “impressionable” years, musically speaking, I am always thrilled when a more modern song gets my attention. James Blunt certainly did that with “You’re Beautiful” and, as you noted, a few others.

James Blunt would be an unknown to me, were it not for my two daughters. One Christmas Eve long ago, the oldest daughter and her then boyfriend had a painful break-up. The younger daughter gave big sis Blunt’s Return to Bedlam album, her own copy. I heard the song, “Goodbye My Lover”, at least a thousand times that week amidst her sorrow and tears. Later, I heard the entire album and this song frequently. This is the first time that I’ve seen the video and I’m curious if she has too. A bit eerie and sad. Thank-you!

THanks for sharing this music video. I had heard this song by James Blunt over the radio. I did not know the artist or anything about the video. A supberbly done and heartbreaking video that rings true of human experience, which haunts our minds.

It is so nice that, amidst all the “mindless babble” of popular songs, one like this comes along on a regular basis! It restores my faith in human creativity and popular music! 🙂

I know what you mean. I’m a selective listern and hated most pop music from the age of 12.

I really like James Blunt, soldier, singer songwriter and Alle round nice guy. He has had his fair share of knockers.
I love 1973 because it’s another real song about relationships and memories.

Ahh! A great pick for today. it was a dreary rainy day outside and this song is a sad but yet wonderful song. I really like his voice and have listened to this song numerous times, but I never knew about the drug addiction. Funny how you can listen to a song so often but never pick up on some things. Knowing that adds an even sadder touch to the song.

As noted in an earlier comment, the “flying high” term used in the video, was “fucking high” in the original recording … which would leave little doubt as to the circumstances.

Yes I would say that pretty plainly states it!

He has such a haunting voice. I remember hearing this song but I had no idea it had anything to do with drug addiction. I missed the line about him being high and had never seen the video. Wow!

In the video he sings her seeing he was “flying high”, but in the original recording it was “fucking high”!

Does he write his own music? Do you know if he actually had an addiction? He’s still around today, right? I am totally out of the loop in the music world, but now I am worried about him. 🙂

It’s a lovely song, though I’d never seen the video. A work colleague died at the age of 18 and it was played at her funeral.

It can certainly be a very thought provoking song (and nobody should die at only 18).
