Snow Dog!

Ray does, in general, appear to like the snow. He runs through it … jumps in it … and quite happily does whatever he has to do in it! He is, not surprisingly, less excited about ice. He is a very strong dog but not the most agile so, when we have a layer of ice beneath the snow, we are constantly saying “Easy Ray …. Easy!” in an effort to slow him down a little in the garden.

Then there are days when he just does not seem too excited about going out. Perhaps he dislikes skidding around as much as we hate to see him out of control?

This is Ray from a few days ago. He seemed to want to go out for his walk, and had found some interesting scents in the snow… but he’s not looking to excited about going any further. Perhaps he found some more ice? Perhaps he was fed up waiting for us outside, while it was snowing, while we got layered up for the walk?

As an aside – Some wonderful news from our Province of Alberta (let’s hope it catches on in the other Provinces)!

“Members of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) have recently voted to ban surgical procedures on pets that are not “medically necessary”. Thanks to this huge step forward for animal rights, things like declawing, tail docking, ear cropping, devocalization, and other inhumane procedures will no longer be available in Alberta.”

    • Hi Jen – Having been initially abandoned under unknown circumstances, he was very challenging for the first 18 months with us (my book about him “Who Said I was up for Adoption?” covers that time frame). Now here we are, 6 years later, and he is such a sweetheart! 🙂

  3. As a rescue, happy to hear your Ray was adopted! And happy! Many of the procedures you are speaking of are all about the outer look of the animals. I walked the other day what one big thing I wish for and my response was that people pay more attention to a dog’s personality than how fluffy their coats are!

    • Sadly in our culture, appearances are generally given a high priority. Puppies are readily adopted because they look “so cute”, but often with no thought about how big they will grow, and what their breed traits may be. We really fall down badly in education!

  7. He’s beautiful! That is WONDERFUL news for Alberta! I really wish people herein the U.S. would do the same. The things done to these poor animals is horrible!

  9. Congratulations on such a forward thinking Province. Poor Ray; he looks miserable. We are complaining because we are experiencing our first hard freeze (actually 32 degrees) over a three day period here on the Texas Gulf Coast. We are definitely spoiled when it comes to cold weather.

  13. Great news about the law change, pets need their ears, claws, tails, voices, etc. Ray looks adorable here. My girl pup isn’t a cold weather fan. My boy is part Lab and doesn’t seem to mind. When hubby throws snow aside as he shovels it, Tailor is right there wanting to dance and play in the fall-out. Balance-wise, their four legs give them an advantage on ice. If one slips, they have 3 others. 🙂

  14. New Zealand has recently enacted laws against tail docking and other unnecessary procedures – let’s hope the tide turns elsewhere. Just as playing frisbee on the beach in summer, I think sliding on the ice is a risk for cruciate ligament injuries in dogs. Hopefully, Ray is learning to self-moderate his exercise.

    • Fortunately, we have leash By-Laws here, so the only time he can run around is in our back garden. He can still skid on the ice and do potential damage, but in general he is self-controlled quite well. 🙂

  17. LOL at this picture. Love it! Though I would agree that by his looks he is definitely not happy! Oh the thoughts that might be going through his mind, one can only imagine. 🙂
