The Carpenters recorded some lovely songs but, unfortunately, the premature passing of Karen Carpenter ended that musical journey. They were very creative, and this brief marriage of melody and harmony was (very deliberately) the last track, on side one, of the original vinyl album ,,, which I still have! Enjoy the beautiful harmonies … and the creative lyrics! 🙂

I so loved the Carpenters. Karen’s voice was unique.

It was wasn’t it. Such a warm, gentle, but attention getting, voice. I miss her, as I do Sandy Denny and Dolores O’Riordan … all who passed far too early in their lives.

LOL! I can see now why that song wasn’t released as a Single, and why I hadn’t heard of it before. They did make beautiful music together and were creative for sure. 🙂

They were favorites of mine. Loved their harmony and her melodic voice. And a drummer to boot. I was in my 40’s by the time she passed, but was still an avid fan.

Yes they certainly had a lovely melodic and warm sound. I have loved her voice from way back then, and still do! “Goodbye to Love” has always been an emotional song for me, with no basis for that other than Karen’s presentation of it.

They really did. We can only speculate what they could have done, but Karen’s passing put and end to that. 😦

Back before then it was worse! I remember playing a symphony on 6 to 8 records (78 rpm). They were numbered to enable stacking and dropping (remember those long turntable spindles designed for the purpose?). My Dad would not allow stacking/dropping for fear of damage to the record, so I had to keep changing the records and turning them over. It was fine because there was no alternative at that time! L.P.’s and E.P.’s were a wonderful later development. 🙂

My mom had a few 78s, but mainly she had LPs. No EPs that I can recall. But it was fun to play 45s and 33s using that 16 speed option, and hear the slow motion sound effect.

I must be of an earlier vintage than you! Our first record player was a wind up! You could make the records speed up/slow down pretty much at will! At 78 rpm, dead flies would go soaring across the room if dropped onto a spinning record! 🙂

Oh yeah, at 78 rpm you could send all kinds of things flying. It was a fun centrifuge to play with.

You guys make me feel young, but I do remember playing my records on our record player. I would carefully place the needle on the record so it wouldn’t scratch. I didn’t want to scratch my Winnie-the-Pooh story records! 🙂 🙂

Loved Karen. Definitely still my one of my favorite voices ever. I often wonder how much more we would have heard from her had she not died so young.

Totally agree with you. Her voice had such soft warm tones. She did so many really nice songs, but “Goodbye to Love” has always been a favourite of mine. 🙂
