Pet(ula) Clark had a lot of successful recordings since the 1960’s and, according to Wikipedia, has sold over 68 million records! One song of hers that I have liked for the past 50+ years is this one (closely followed by “Downtown”). Enjoy.

She had the “nice girl next door” image. No pretense. 🙂

A great song which has been going through my mind for awhile now, thanks to you. 🙂 Brad really likes Petula Clark and this song too.

She’s one of my favorites from the 60s. She once inadvertently caused a minor scandal in America when she touched a black man’s arm (Harry Belafonte), on national television. Seems an executive from Chrysler, the program’s sponsor, didn’t care for such interracial contact, and raised a big stink. It was kind of a tempest in a teapot that soon blew over, with the Chrysler corporation apologizing.

Have things really changed since then? I guess they have, but race still seems to be a significant issue in so many parts of the country.

I think it has. I believe the claim is that racism is no longer overt but rather, it’s now covert. But how do you prove covert?

Technically, I guess you can’t. As covert behaviour will eventually translate into a comment and/or an action though, it will then become apparent … and then proven.

This is probably my favourite song by her. Downtown was OK, but I much preferred this. I can play part of it, but never quite got the key change right!

I also play by ear, and key changes can be really tricky! 🙂
