“Don’t Sleep in the Subway”

Pet(ula) Clark had a lot of successful recordings since the 1960’s and, according to Wikipedia, has sold over 68 million records! One song of hers that I have liked for the past 50+ years is this one (closely followed by “Downtown”). Enjoy.

She’s one of my favorites from the 60s. She once inadvertently caused a minor scandal in America when she touched a black man’s arm (Harry Belafonte), on national television. Seems an executive from Chrysler, the program’s sponsor, didn’t care for such interracial contact, and raised a big stink. It was kind of a tempest in a teapot that soon blew over, with the Chrysler corporation apologizing.
