Still in the Lonnie Donegan era, “Jack of Diamonds” was apparently released in 1957, but it was some time after “Cumberland Gap” before I heard it. If I recall correctly, “Jack of Diamonds” was the first 45rpm record I owned! As with “Cumberland Gap”, the lyrics are not particularly meaningful, but then … wasn’t skiffle all about rhythm?
I remember skiffle well as I said last time mainly because of the music in our house when I was little. I think skiffle was about rhythm and improvisation my brother’s played spoons and used tables and chairs as drums.

Did they ever stick a wooden broom handle into large wooden box; run a string from the top of the broom handle down to the outside edge of the box, and play the bass notes on it? The notes could be changed by pulling on the broom handle to change the tension on the string!

Absolutely, and “Puttin’ on the Style”, and “Grand Coulee Dam”, and “Rock Island Line” and quite a few others that were less known! Check your email Di. 🙂

I like the gigantic TV cameras in the video. Nowadays TV cameras are a fraction of that size and weight and can do so much more.
