I had really hoped that, by now, I would be announcing the release date… but that is not the case! I had another couple of “glitches” with the copyright people which, while rather frustrating, were educational.
The back cover photograph and one inside, both show me and Ray together. The copyright rules apparently dictate that either I confirm that I used a tripod or some other means to take those pictures, or the person behind the camera gives me permission to use them! I could have lied, but that really is not me, so Carol emailed her permission.
Shortly after that was dealt with, I had another request to the effect that all contributors to the book (i.e. photographers, anybody I have quoted, and myself) must state their country of residence and their nationality. That too was dealt with immediately.
So where are we now?
A preview of the book is now on the FriesenPress book store site (link below)
FriesenPress have advised that I can share the above link with family and friends for promotional purposes however, that page is preview only at this time. Once the book is officially published, then copies can be purchased via that same link.
The pricing of the book may seem a little high to some of you however, please keep in mind that the suggested selling prices are just that – suggested. It is expected that the major book retailers will discount. It should also be noted that there is a gallery of color photos in the book, which naturally pushed up the printing costs quite a bit and, finally, it is a fund raiser with all profits going to the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. They did such a wonderful job on Ray to enable him to be adopted, and have supported us (and still do) with various issues, that the least we can do is to support them.
The book title has now been submitted to the distributor, and it is generally 4-5 days before it is available for printing and sale at a print on demand facility. It will take around 2-5 weeks from that point for other retailers (i.e. Amazon etc) to stock it and make all features available. Not only therefore will FriesenPress be able to sell copies ahead of the major book stores, but I understand that their price could be a little less than that expected by those major book stores.
I can clearly see the proverbial “light at the end the tunnel”… but will not be out of it for a few days yet!
Making forward progress is an ongoing thing. Seems like you’re still eating the elegant one bite at a time, which is the good news. Looking forward to the launch date. Kudos, Colin!

Timely post. I was thinking about your book this morning and decided to ask if it was out yet (although I couldn’t imagine you not telling us!). Sounds like there are a lot of hoops to jump through!

I knew when I made the decision to write and publish that I would benefit from a publishing “partner”, but I had no idea that there would be so many considerations that have to be addressed with such a venture. I can now understand other authors who have said that the easiest part of the whole process was writing the book. It is quite true!
