“Song of Bernadette”

Jennifer Warnes obviously liked Leonard Cohen’s writings as she released an album (“Famous Blue Raincoat”) based on them. “Song of Bernadette” was an immediate hit with me, and I still love this arrangement of it. Enjoy.

Yes, I agree that Jennifer Warnes has a crystal-clear diction and sweet voice. I am getting rather emotional, perhaps because I am still mourning, or perhaps I am listening to “Song of Bernadette” by Jennifer Warnes, Leonard Cohen and Bill Elliott, first recorded on Jennifer Warnesโ€™ 1986 album Famous Blue Raincoat with a renewed perspective.

After listening to the songs many times, I have typed out the lyrics as follows, word for word:

There was a child named Bernadette
I heard the story long ago
She saw the queen of heaven once
And kept the vision in her soul
No one believed what she had seen
No one believed what she heard
But there were sorrows to be healed
And mercy, mercy in this world

So many hearts I find, broke like yours and mine
Torn by what weโ€™ve done and canโ€™t undo
I just want to hold you, come on let me hold you
      Like Bernadette would do

Weโ€™ve been around, we fall, we fly
We mostly fall, we mostly run
And every now and then we try
To mend the damage that weโ€™ve done
Tonight, tonight I just canโ€™t rest
Iโ€™ve got this joy here in, inside my breast
To think that I did not forget
That child, that song of Bernadette

So many hearts I find, hearts like yours and mine
Torn by what weโ€™ve done and canโ€™t undo
I just want to hold you, wonโ€™t you let me hold you
      Like Bernadette would do
I just want to hold you, come on let me hold hold hold you
      Like Bernadette would do
