Jennifer Warnes obviously liked Leonard Cohen’s writings as she released an album (“Famous Blue Raincoat”) based on them. “Song of Bernadette” was an immediate hit with me, and I still love this arrangement of it. Enjoy.

I don’t know a lot of songs sang by Jennifer Warnes but what I know is beautiful. This one is new to me too. Just listening to it and it gives me goosebumps. Thank you for sharing this gem, Colin!

Somebody once said “If music be the food of love … play on!” Always a pleasure to share Erika.

Hi Colin,
I too concur with Ron Walker. What a moving and sweet, lyrical song indeed! Thank you for sharing it. You have a fine musical taste, Colin.
This song also reminds me of another love ballad entitled “I Just Fall in Love Again”, which is very much rendered in a similar vein, speed and sentiment. It was famously sung by Anne Murray, who also sang “Song of Bernadette”, which is included in her two CD set released in 1999 called “What a Wonderful World”.
I would also like to thank you for leaving your comment in my very special post at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2019/08/31/khai-khim-for-always-and-beyond-goodbye/comment-page-1/#comment-10633
I shall render a very bespoke reply to you as soon as I can.
May all of you have a very lovely weekend! 🙂

What a sweet voice and her voice mixed with the sound of the piano makes for a beautiful song. Another new one for me. 🙂

Were you not listening to music in the mid-80s?

Haha! Yes, I did listen to music, a lot of music, but it was mostly pop and Country. 🙂

Pop and Country … that was pretty much her career!

Oh gosh! I was wrong. I am familiar with her songs, just wasn’t with this one. I had her name wrong. No comment needed. ☺️
But yes, her “I had the time of my Life” song I listened to many times.
Name a love song from the 80’s and I have probably heard it. 🙂

Yes, I agree that Jennifer Warnes has a crystal-clear diction and sweet voice. I am getting rather emotional, perhaps because I am still mourning, or perhaps I am listening to “Song of Bernadette” by Jennifer Warnes, Leonard Cohen and Bill Elliott, first recorded on Jennifer Warnes’ 1986 album Famous Blue Raincoat with a renewed perspective.
After listening to the songs many times, I have typed out the lyrics as follows, word for word:
There was a child named Bernadette
I heard the story long ago
She saw the queen of heaven once
And kept the vision in her soul
No one believed what she had seen
No one believed what she heard
But there were sorrows to be healed
And mercy, mercy in this world
So many hearts I find, broke like yours and mine
Torn by what we’ve done and can’t undo
I just want to hold you, come on let me hold you
Like Bernadette would do
We’ve been around, we fall, we fly
We mostly fall, we mostly run
And every now and then we try
To mend the damage that we’ve done
Tonight, tonight I just can’t rest
I’ve got this joy here in, inside my breast
To think that I did not forget
That child, that song of Bernadette
So many hearts I find, hearts like yours and mine
Torn by what we’ve done and can’t undo
I just want to hold you, won’t you let me hold you
Like Bernadette would do
I just want to hold you, come on let me hold hold hold you
Like Bernadette would do
