“For No One”

This was a very typical song of the mid 1970’s, and I was just listening to it in that context when it struck me that it’s not totally out of place today. Appeals have been made for fighting around the world to cease so that all efforts can be focused on COVID-19. Will those appeals be heard? Based on the state of worldly affairs in the 1970’s, and how little has changed, I have to be skeptical.

Please lay down your pistols and your rifles
Please lay down your colours and your creeds
Please lay down your thoughts of being no-one
Concentrate on what you ought to be

Then lay down your bullshit and your protests
Then lay down your governments of greed
Take a look at what lies all around you
Then pray God we can live in peace

Everyone’s a loner ’till he needs a helping hand
Everyone is everybody else
Everyone’s a no-one ’till he wants to make a stand
God alone knows how we will survive

So please lay down your pistols and your rifles
Please lay down your colours and your creeds
Please lay down your thoughts of being no-one
Concentrate on what you ought to be

Everyone’s a loner ’till he needs a helping hand
Everyone is everybody else
Everyone’s a no-one ’till he wants to make a stand
God alone knows how we will survive

Two Cellos!

I saw a video of the 2Cellos for the first time this past week, and I was really impressed at how they had taken a rather stereotyped classical-music instrument and taken it into another dimension! Continue reading

“Nimrod” – More information!

Carol was digging around the internet (which is her habit when she has questions but no answers), and came up with the reason why the Elgar Enigma Variations performance in yesterdays video was clearly an emotional experience. The following was copied from the WQXR Blog: Continue reading

“Nimrod”

I was introduced to Classical music very early in my life, but that interest was (not surprisingly) limited to pieces that were easy to relate to. The appeal was simply the melodic simplicity. So much classical music is, to a novice, rather complex and subsequently difficult to understand. I could write quite a few Posts on this topic however, my point is that even if you are not typically a fan of classical music, give yourself the few minutes necessary to listen this video. “I Started a Joke”

Nobody could possibly have lived through the 70’s and not heard the Bee Gees. Robin Gibb is, sadly, no longer with us … but we can still enjoy his performances. Continue reading

“Intermission”

The Carpenters recorded some lovely songs but, unfortunately, the premature passing of Karen Carpenter ended that musical  journey. They were very creative, and this brief marriage of melody and harmony was (very deliberately) the last track, on side one, of the original vinyl album ,,, which I still have! Enjoy the beautiful harmonies … and the creative lyrics! 🙂 Continue reading

“Sleep On My Shoulder”

I have developed a very broad taste in music over the years, but Country music was always rather elusive.  Continue reading

YouTube weird?

This morning, my Post included three YouTube links relating to “Black Horse and Cherry Tree”. The final link (at least on Carol’s iPad) shows KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See” video!

I went back to my PC to check and I am showing “Black Horse and Cherry Tree”, so I have no idea why the inconsistency between devices.  Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated but, in the meantime, you may have to search YouTube if you want to see KT Tunstall using technology for “Black Horse and Cherry Tree”.

“Black Horse and Cherry Tree”

KT Tunstall recorded “Black Horse & Cherry Tree”, and presents it live with the use of a loop machine (aka looper). This is a wonderful piece of modern technology. Continue reading
