Precious moments of peace.

We recently took Ray on a trail walk as he seems to love a more natural environment. He buried his nose in the fallen leaves and, moving with purpose, followed scents that we could only guess at. Every now and then he would stop, lift his head and look around, then back into the leaves his nose would go as he once again followed his instincts. Continue reading

Rocket Boy!

Ray impresses me in so many ways. Of course, he being my first dog probably means that I am easily impressed however, at this moment I am just thinking about his sprint capacity! I have watched him take off after a squirrel, and seen him charging around the garden at high speed having a “zoomie”, and can only admire both his power and his style. Continue reading

Excuse me please.

Given that Ray is my first experience of living with a dog, a number of his idiosyncrasies I simply put down to probably typical rescued dog behaviour. These would be situations like laying at my feet when I am preparing food; staring at me while I am consuming food; standing behind me hoping that I’ll trip over him and drop some food; climbing into the refrigerator (figuratively speaking of course) with me, just hoping that his mouth will bump into food. Sleeping Beauty?

Most nights, I have some degree of sleeping issues which generally dictate that I put the headphones on and listen to music for a short while, or I just get up and find something quiet to do, and the other night was really bad. In fact when Carol left for work the following morning, I decided to go back to bed and try to catch up on some sleep which I duly did. Continue reading

Pumpkin Pie & Whipping Cream

Ray knows how to behave around food.  When visiting the Lululemon store, he will automatically sit close to the biscuit bowl and wait for me to give him some pieces of biscuit. Continue reading

The Snow Pile!

Snowflakes can come visiting at any time now, although I rather hope that I can have a few more weeks without them. It’s not that I don’t like the snow, but rather once it starts it never seems to go away. Every new snow fall layers itself very carefully on top of the last one and with the continual accumulations, together with some very low temperatures, I am generally wishing for spring weather by March. This is guaranteed not to happen, but I can dream! Continue reading

Introducing Ray.

I thought that this might be a good time to show Ray in more detail. You have probably already seen his eyes at the top of the Home page, and you may have seen his face peering over the edge of a sofa pleading for food (see Post – Communication a la Ray.). Continue reading

The good neighbour

Carol and I took Ray out for a walk the other evening, but this time we needed to go over the road to give a neighbour a thank you card and book for allowing us to park on her driveway while ours was having a make-over! Ray has ongoing issues with people he does not know very well, the reasons for which can only be speculated upon however, we are working on it and he is responding quite well to the concept that people = treats. Continue reading

Where there is love, there is life.

Sometimes I look at Ray and I am in total conflict with feelings of sadness for his past life, and happiness with having him here. His past life really is an unknown but there are a lot of indicators pointing towards less than desirable circumstances. When I first met him he was expressionless, distant, vocal, and reactive. He was a loner. He was a survivor. Continue reading

How it started

Ray (a 75lb German Shepherd X) was reported as a stray and subsequently picked up by the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. He had no collar; no identification, and a scan did not locate a microchip. There were no reports of a missing dog that matched his description and he was never claimed. He was afraid of everybody and everything; did not want to be touched; lunged and barked without warning and, after almost 4 months of  TLC was put up for adoption. I only had experience of budgerigars, cats and rabbits but Ray adopted me anyway!
